Nat Geo Education: Mapping

With new standards that are emphasizing global literacy and information texts, the National Geographic Education: Mapping page comes in very handy!

The nice thing about the Mapping page is that it has Encyclopedia entries (our school struggles for up-to-date encyclopedias), map making kits, printable 1 page maps, featured maps and other map-related activities.

Black bears in the USA - David Attenborough - BBC wildlife

In the spirit of webcams and watching Jewel, Lily, Faith, Honey & Lucky at the North American Bear Center, I went in search of information about black bears. This video is only 1.5 minutes long but it shows the "magic cam", a video camera on steroids. It looks like a rectangular box (each side has a mirror) on wheels. In the forest, you can't even tell that it's there because of the reflections on the mirror! Really neat to watch!

Wonderopolis!

I have been inundated with great resources lately and this is the first in a long list...

Wonderopolis.org does a "Wonder of the Day" every day that is geared towards kids in grades 2-8. Each wonder of the day starts with an essential question. Recently an essential question was "Do you believe in UFO's?". Each wonder has a brief video clip (3 minutes or less), an explanation/information passage, vocabulary words, and questions to reflect on.

It's time for animal webcam season!

Last school year my students watched a hummingbird cam, eagle cam, peregrine falcon cam, and a shiba-inu puppy cam. By the end of the season last year we were obsessed!

My mom recently found a webcam at www.bear.org and has been observing Jewel as she has gotten ready to deliver cubs. Well, today Jewel had 2 cubs! At least!

Another great one to keep an eye on is the bald eagle nest at Lake Jordan in NC. Right now the mom is sitting in the nest with a bunch of fish lined up by the edge!
